Departing from the repetitive grammar translation method to other innovative approaches helped me attain a certain level of motivation and interest from my students in learning ESL. One of the approaches. The acquisition of foreign languages and multicultural awareness has become an essential asset for new generations. Furthermore, learning a foreign language has been shown to provide students with various additional benefits: students gain access to the cultural and intellectual heritage of other cultures while obtaining a new perspective on the structure and complexity of their own language and culture. For most students, fulfilling the college foreign language requirement is not an issue.
Learning new thing is always challenging for human being. I have gone through a hard time to learn English as a second language at the very beginning but after practicing hard and observing people how they talk, I am doing better day by day, getting used to the accent and it is getting natural and more natural to me and I came out with that it is hard to dominate but not impossible to achieve a new language. I got afraid when I was going to join Thompson Rivers University here in Canada, which was far away from my country with totally a new culture and new people. I became nervous because I had no experience of getting adjusted with a whole new place, language and culture. This became a big concern for me to talk in English fluently for keeping my confidence on exact point while communicating with everyone in here. I was in a fix what to do.
The usefulness of learning a foreign language has been under debate. Many college students complain about having to fulfill the foreign language requirement. Learning a foreign language in college takes too much time and is costly and is complicated by the face it is also ineffective, but it has many long term benefits, such as being more culturally aware and being valued more in the job market. The solution to this problem is to move the foreign language requirement to an earlier age.
Systematic vocabulary instruction may result in better acquisition than simply having students read or learn words from context. Besides, reading advances vocabulary knowledge, and vocabulary knowledge enhances reading development. With multimedia programs or software as a learning tool, students are more able to broaden their vocabulary size to improve their reading…. On top of that, it ensures a greater degree of cognitive depth due to the mental effort involved, this again adds to the memory.
