There are many definitions of good and evil in this world as there are people. Some see evil as the unknown, some Catholics may view evil as pure sin, while others may think evil is the changing of one's destiny for any unethical purpose. In the novel, Antonio Marez has multiple exposures of maturity, such as being raised in a rural area, experiencing death firsthand, and learning the act of forgiveness.
Although Antonio does not want to disappoint either of his parents, he must eventually choose his own path. The novel contains elements of all of these types of stories. It is a very realistic life story because it follows the growth of its young protagonist as he deals with real life issues. At the same time, the novel contains many elements of fantasy and magic, with the myth of the Golden Carp, the good magic of Ultima, and the black magic of the Trementina sisters.
