Biology A,B: Experimental Thesis | Pomona College in Claremont, California - Pomona College
Experimental research is the most familiar type of research design for individuals in the physical sciences and a host of other fields. This is mainly because experimental research is a classical scientific experiment, similar to those performed in high school science classes. Imagine taking 2 samples of the same plant and exposing one of them to sunlight, while the other is kept away from sunlight. Let the plant exposed to sunlight be called sample A, while the latter is called sample B. If after the duration of the research, we find out that sample A grows and sample B dies, even though they are both regularly wetted and given the same treatment.
The term experiment is defined as the systematic procedure carried out under controlled conditions in order to discover an unknown effect, to test or establish a hypothesis, or to illustrate a known effect. When analyzing a process, experiments are often used to evaluate which process inputs have a significant impact on the process output, and what the target level of those inputs should be to achieve a desired result output. Experiments can be designed in many different ways to collect this information. Experimental design can be used at the point of greatest leverage to reduce design costs by speeding up the design process, reducing late engineering design changes, and reducing product material and labor complexity.
That is the question:…. Life is full of questions and choices. Some are life changing — as for Hamlet. Most are not — but they still require careful thought. One question that many Landscape Architecture students find hard to resolve is how to link the scientific, artistic, and practical dimensions of design.
