On May 6, , a public version of Bigtable was made available as a service. Bigtable development began in and is now used by a number of Google applications, such as web indexing, MapReduce , which is often used for generating and modifying data stored in Bigtable, Google Maps , Google Book Search , "My Search History", Google Earth , Blogger. Bigtable is one of the prototypical examples of a wide column store. It maps two arbitrary string values row key and column key and timestamp hence three-dimensional mapping into an associated arbitrary byte array. It is not a relational database and can be better defined as a sparse, distributed multi-dimensional sorted map.

There are three interesting stories that come out of the paper for me, each of which could be a post on its own:. The dataset is on the order of 10s of TBs. Resharding this revenue-critical database as it grew in the number of customers and their data was extremely costly. The last resharding took over two years of intense effort, and involved coordination and testing across dozens of teams to minimize risk. When something is that painful, you really want to stop doing it. This lead the team to start storing data outside of MySQL in external tables in order to prevent further growth… which is a slippery slope to creating a mess.
Cloud BigTable is a distributed storage system used in Google, it can be classified as a non-relational database system. BigTable is designed mainly for scalability. It typically works on petabytes of data spread across thousands of machines. There is not much public information about the detail of BigTable, since it is proprietory to Google. The most authoritative information about it is its paper.
Google uses as a data storage a facility called Bigtable. Bigtable is a distributed, persistent, multidimensional sorted map. Bigtable is not a relational database. In Bigtable you can store strings under an index which consists out of a row key, a column key and a timestamp. This key points to a uninterpreted array of bytes string of size 64 KB.
