With the addition of South Dakota, nine states are participating in the program to promote the expansion of business opportunities for state-inspected meat and poultry establishments. Under CIS, selected state-inspected establishments that comply with federal inspection requirements are permitted to ship their products in interstate commerce. We want to work with other states to encourage participation in this important program. In addition, the state must collect regulatory samples at the same frequency and use the same analytical methods at laboratories that meet the same level of accreditation as the federal FSIS laboratories.

Charges against the Rhode Island men and their company involve fraud for using the official mark of inspection on beef without authorization of the Secretary of Agriculture. They also knowingly represented beef as inspected and passed under the Federal Meat Inspection Act, when it was not. Finally, they were defrauding a customer with beef that was supposed to be capable of use as food but it did not comply with the Federal Meat Inspection Act. The June trial, however, was called off earlier this week.
