Ralph and his group had gone to the cave where Jack and Roger savages were to get back Piggy's specs. When they got there they had people blocking the way to get in. Ralph had to explain why they were there and then they had captured Ralph and Samneric. Piggy had got in and he had the conch shell in his hand and he was telling everyone how immature they were being. Ralph calls it murder while Piggy insists that it was an accident.
Imagine a group of young boys who have just crash-landed on a deserted tropical island with no adults or supervision. When the surviving boys gathered around, they were quick to choose Ralph as their chief although Jack, who was portrayed as leader of the boys, desperately wanted to become chief as well. The first orders of business were building shelters but Jack believed that hunting was the number one priority; as a result, it caused many problems between Ralph and Jack that lead to the split of the tribe. Ralph was the only one left from his tribe and the number one target to Jack.
