The first recorded thesis was dated , though all theses prior to were lost during the occupation of WWII. The HKU Scholars Hub includes theses in the arts, humanities, education and the social, medical and natural sciences. Many of them deal entirely with or focus on subjects relating to Hong Kong. The collection is primarily in English, with some in English and Chinese, and others in Chinese only. Missing older ones might still be located in HKU departmental libraries. Almost all other thesis producing HKU degrees now require the same.

A graduate degree generally requires completing either a thesis or a dissertation, and there is a difference between thesis and dissertation. He would read his thesis to his committee, after which he sat in silence while two faculty members gave point by point refutations of everything he said. If a student wished to advance further in academia he could pursue a dissertation. This was more of a literature review. He would read widely in a particular area and write up his findings, discussing the various authorities and their opinions. The point was to demonstrate that he was well versed in the literature of the field.

During your last semester as a graduate student, you must apply to graduate, in addition to completing other required steps. A paper form may be submitted by students enrolled in dual-degree programs. Contact a Graduate Coordinator to obtain the paper form, to which you must attach a program of work that has been approved by your program graduate adviser. Students who do not submit the form by the deadline will not be eligible to receive their degree until the subsequent semester. If you find after filing for graduation that you will not complete your degree requirements, contact the Graduate School for instructions for rescheduling your graduation.
